Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby will reportedly make royal history after its birth.
Joe Gamp, a journalist for Express, said that Queen Elizabeth II’s newest great-grandchild will be the first member of the royal family to possibly have dual citizenship.
Markle reportedly made an application for British residency shortly before her engagement to Prince Harry. Current rules state that a child born to an overseas couple where at least one parent is a US citizen can receive American citizenship upon its birth.
The Duchess of Sussex’s current American citizenship and Prince Harry’s British citizenship will make their baby the first royal baby to be born as both American and British.
But sources told The Times that Markle would still have to wait for years before she could receive her British citizenship. Her status as a royal will not speed up the processing of her documents.  Meanwhile, even though Markle will take longer to become a British citizen than her offspring, she and Prince Harry will most likely raise their child following their respective heritages. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex plan on letting their child experience American holidays such as Thanksgiving and Independence Day. As of late, it seems that Markle also has no plans to renounce her American citizenship. This could only mean that she has to pay taxes in her home country. Royal historian Hugo Vickers also talked about Markle and her baby’s citizenship.
“For whatever reason, we don’t seem to pay much attention to the nationality of royal brides when it comes to their children. We just subsume them into the royal family,” he said. “I’m quite sure we haven’t had another British-American baby born into the royal family. But Meghan married an English prince so to all intents and purposes that baby will be British,” he added.
Markle is scheduled to give birth in the Spring. During one of her latest walkabouts, she told royal fans that her due date is at the end of April and at the beginning of May.
