Caballero to earn new Chelsea contract on one condition

Willy Caballero is in line to earn a new Chelsea contract – as long as the club can fill their home-grown quota. Goalkeeper Caballero won widespread praise for the way in which he coped with Kepa Arrizabalaga’s refusal to be replaced by him in Chelsea’s Carabao Cup final penalty shootout defeat to Manchester City. It is understood that Chelsea had already hoped to offer Caballero a 12-month extension to his contract that is due to expire at the end of the season before the Kepa incident. But his reaction has further strengthened the feeling around the club that the 37-year-old Argentine should be kept on due to his professionalism on and off the pitch. Chelsea are currently assessing how they will fill their Premier League and European home-grown places next season, with Gary Cahill, Danny Drinkwater and Victor Moses all expected to leave, and 39-year-old Robert Green’s contract also due to expire. The Blues generally fill one of their home-grown spots with a goalkeeper, which would mean keeping Green or signing a new stopper to compete with Kepa and Caballero who would boost their quota.
Chelsea signed Caballero on a free transfer from Manchester City in 2017 and took up the option of a further 12 months on his contract at the end of last season. Caballero started ahead of Kepa in the 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur and was congratulated by team-mates David Luiz, Cesar Azpilicueta and Pedro at the end of the game. Sarri must now decide whether to stick with Caballero or reinstate Kepa for Sunday’s London derby against Fulham, with the Italian already confirming Kepa will return in either the trip to Craven Cottage or the Europa League clash with Dynamo Kiev.
